SUMMARY:PLAG Chautauqua – “Paint the Lake” Plein Air Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique Plein Air “Paint Out” in Palmer Lak
 e\, CO\, celebrating the camaraderie of fellow painters from across the fr
 ont range. Participants may select from any location around the lake or fr
 om 4-5 previewed areas around the town. We will start the day at the park 
 Gazebo to the sounds of live Scottish bagpipes being played on the Lake’
 s bridge while registering and setting up plein air kits at painter’s ch
 osen locations for the morning painting period. After a BBQ lunch (include
 d) and shorter afternoon painting period\, submissions for judging will be
 gin at the tent area at 2:30 PM where painters receiving awards for first 
 through third places\, receiving $500\, $350 and $200 awards respectively.
 \n\nAfter the awards ceremony\, all Plein Air participants are invited to 
 join a 2 hour afternoon special event from celebrated landscape painter an
 d Coors Western Art Show “Young Guns” artist Michael Magrin\, with a d
 iscussion and demonstration on “Painting Big Skies” (included). Attend
 ees will enjoy Michael’s contemporary take and unique portrayal of weste
 rn sky and cloudscapes which blend nostalgia with tranquility through his 
 use of bold shapes. Michael’s background as an instructor and mentor has
  provided many opportunities for artists to learn from his thought process
  and traditional techniques that capture a modern vision. Michael’s work

DESCRIPTION:Date and Times: \n\nThe workshop will be on Tuesday afternoons
  starting Sept. 24th\, 2024\, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and run for 6 weekly se
 ssions.\n\nDescription:\n\nPainting is challenging\, we want to worry abou
 t what to paint instead of how to paint it. The idea is to be comfortable 
 with the procedure of painting so you are free to be creative. The emphasi
 s will be on oil painting\, but if anyone wants to use gouache\, that coul
 d work because a lot of the issues with oil as a medium\nalso apply to gou
 ache.\n\nWe will try to get more confident with color and color mixing. Al
 so work on problems artists have with paint application and the best way t
 o start a painting. Also issues with solvents and mediums. We also will wo
 rk on better design and composition.\n\nWe will be mainly doing painting s
 tudies in the 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 sizes with the goal being to quickly block 
 in the large color shapes and values so that you have a pretty good color 
 and value composition before diving into the details.  Also planning ahea
 d so that you can put in the details without fighting the wet paint undern
 eath.  We also have to work on getting comfortable with drawing with a br
 ush!\n\nThere are two big screen TVs that I put images up on to paint from
 . I will probably do some basic demos\, but want everyone else to do most 
 of the painting.  The images that I offer to paint are suggestions for th
 e studies.  If someone brings an image (a photo of an image or say an ima
 ge on an iPad ) that they would like to paint\, that would be fine.\n\nThe
  Materials List that I recommend:\nAn easel\n8 x 10 or 9 x 12 canvas panel
 s (could go as big as 11 x 14).\nThese are going to be mainly studies\, so
  I suggest inexpensive\npanels. You can get them from many sources\, Micha
 els\, Hobby Lobby\, Blicks\, Amazon\, Meiningers etc.\n\nPaint Colors:  (
 what I mainly use\, but any colors that approximate these would work)\nTit
 anium white\nNaples yellow pale (certainly optional\, but a great color)\n
 Winsor and Newton -\n\nCadmium orange\nLt. Red (very handy color but optio
 nal)\nCadmium red medium\nAlizarin Crimson\nUltramarine blue\nCobalt blue\
 nPermanent green\nSap green\nRaw umber\nBurnt umber\nIvory black\n\nThis i
 s a pretty extensive Winsor and Newton palette. You can get away with one 
 blue\, and one green. You can get similar colors with gouache\,\nIf you ha
 ve palette colors you’re happy with\, just use that.\n\nBrushes:\nBrushe
 s are pretty important. Everyone has favorites.\nThese are some of mine:\n
 Trekell Opal. #2\, 4 and 6 flats or brights\nSilver Bristlon brights #2 an
 d 4 flats\, brights or filberts\nRosemary ivory synthetics #2\, 4 and 6\nG
 rumbacher Gainsborough #2\, 4 and 6 flats or brights\nBeste Golden Takalon
  round #4 This is the only round suggested\, you may want a small round br
 ush #1 or a Rigger\nMight also need one larger brush #8? Probably not nece
 ssary\nThese are just suggestions\n\nSolvents:\nSuggest Terpenoid or other
  odorless solvents\n\nMiscellaneous\;\nPaper towels\, palette knife\n\nLoc

SUMMARY:Holiday Tree and Ornament Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Over the holiday period PLAG members have created and donated h
 oliday tree ornaments to be sold in support of the PLAG Art Scholarship pr
 ogram.  These ornaments vary in type and size but are typically created a
 s original pieces as small 2 and 3D pieces.  We will be holding an Orname
 nt Workshop Oct 12 after our usual monthly meeting and then volunteers wil
 l join together at Irmi Knoth’s Studio to gather and coordinate the orna
 ments for hanging on our tree located at Bella Art and Frame in Monument.
    The studio is located on the south side of the Monument Hill Church\,
  18725 Monument Hill Rd.\, with a separate entry directly off the parking

 be mainly doing painting studies in the 8 x 10\, 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 sizes (
 these are just my suggestion)\n\nThere are two big screen TVs that I put i
 mages up on to paint from. I will probably do some basic demos\, but want 
 everyone else to do most of the\npainting. The images that I will offer to
  paint are suggestions that are simple enough to be painted fairly quickly
 . If someone brings an image ( a photo of\nan image or say an image on a t
 ablet) that they would like to paint\, that would be all right if its fair
 ly simple.The idea is not to get a framable result\,\nbut to get comfortab
 le with the brushes and the consistency of the paint.\n\nThe Materials Lis
 t that I recommend:\nAn easel\n8 x 10\, 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 canvas panels. T
 hese are going to be mainly\nstudies\, so I suggest inexpensive panels. Yo
 u can get them from many\nsources\, Michaels\, Hobby Lobby\, Blicks\, Jerr
 y’s Artarama\, Amazon\,\nMeiningers etc.\n\nPalette Colors: (this is a f
 airly limited palette\, My paints are Winsor and\nNewton)\nTitanium white\
 nCadmium Yellow Pale\nNaples yellow pale ( certainly optional\, but a grea
 t color) Winsor and\nNewton\nYellow Ochre\nCadmium orange\nCadmium red med
 ium\nAlizarin Crimson\nUltramarine blue\nPermanent green medium ( This is 
 a medium green\, not to cool and not too\nwarm)\nRaw umber\nBurnt umber\nI
 vory black\nThis is a pretty common palette\, other good brands will give 
 you pretty\nmuch the same colors.\n\nBrushes:\nBrushes are very important 
 for drawing and brush work.\nI really like Brights that have a nice chisel
  edge for beginning work\nTrekell Opal. #2\, 4 and 6 flats or brights\nSil
 ver Bristlon brights #2 and 4 flats\, brights\nRosemary ivory synthetics #
 2\, 4 and 6 brights\nBeste Golden Takalon round #4 This is the only round 
 suggested\, you\nmay want a small round brush #2 Rounds should come to a p
 oint!\nI’m suggesting mainly brights and flats for quick work\, but you 
 can certainly\nbring filberts or your personal favorites.\nGood brushes fo
 r blending are softer brushes and worn brushes that have\nflared out and h
 ave become softer. A soft round that comes to a point are\ngreat for detai
 ls (#2 and #4 are good)\n\nSolvents:\nSuggest Terpenoid or other odorless 
 solvents\n\nMiscellaneous:\nPaper towels\, palette knife\nSome people like
  to use a painting medium of which there are many. I use\nvery little or n
 o medium\, but if you are used to painting with mediums\, bring\nthem. (To
 o much medium use can result in problems)\nApron?\nWhatever else you’re

 t canvases.  Judging and Awards will begin at noon.  Food trucks and liv
