Date and Times:
The workshop will be on Tuesday afternoons starting Sept. 24th, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and run for 6 weekly sessions.
Description:
Painting is challenging, we want to worry about what to paint instead of how to paint it. The idea is to be comfortable with the procedure of painting so you are free to be creative. The emphasis will be on oil painting, but if anyone wants to use gouache, that could work because a lot of the issues with oil as a medium
also apply to gouache.
We will try to get more confident with color and color mixing. Also work on problems artists have with paint application and the best way to start a painting. Also issues with solvents and mediums. We also will work on better design and composition.
We will be mainly doing painting studies in the 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 sizes with the goal being to quickly block in the large color shapes and values so that you have a pretty good color and value composition before diving into the details. Also planning ahead so that you can put in the details without fighting the wet paint underneath. We also have to work on getting comfortable with drawing with a brush!
There are two big screen TVs that I put images up on to paint from. I will probably do some basic demos, but want everyone else to do most of the painting. The images that I offer to paint are suggestions for the studies. If someone brings an image (a photo of an image or say an image on an iPad ) that they would like to paint, that would be fine.
The Materials List that I recommend:
An easel
8 x 10 or 9 x 12 canvas panels (could go as big as 11 x 14).
These are going to be mainly studies, so I suggest inexpensive
panels. You can get them from many sources, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Blicks, Amazon, Meiningers etc.
Paint Colors: (what I mainly use, but any colors that approximate these would work)
Titanium white
Naples yellow pale (certainly optional, but a great color)
Winsor and Newton –
Cadmium orange
Lt. Red (very handy color but optional)
Cadmium red medium
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine blue
Cobalt blue
Permanent green
Sap green
Raw umber
Burnt umber
Ivory black
This is a pretty extensive Winsor and Newton palette. You can get away with one blue, and one green. You can get similar colors with gouache,
If you have palette colors you’re happy with, just use that.
Brushes:
Brushes are pretty important. Everyone has favorites.
These are some of mine:
Trekell Opal. #2, 4 and 6 flats or brights
Silver Bristlon brights #2 and 4 flats, brights or filberts
Rosemary ivory synthetics #2, 4 and 6
Grumbacher Gainsborough #2, 4 and 6 flats or brights
Beste Golden Takalon round #4 This is the only round suggested, you may want a small round brush #1 or a Rigger
Might also need one larger brush #8? Probably not necessary
These are just suggestions
Solvents:
Suggest Terpenoid or other odorless solvents
Miscellaneous;
Paper towels, palette knife
